I just got an order for a gypsy guitar maker. He is one of the top guitar makers in Granada; he also comes from
a colorful background. Coming from a famous gypsy family he has tried to educate himself to break the family ties.
His family has more than one Flamenco guitarist that is the most famous in Spain but also another relative is one
of the top pop guitarists in the rock group Ketama. When I first came to Granada my bank told me the Juan Miguel
was the most honest of all his customers at the bank. This is the opposite of what most people experience in the world.
I recently secured an order for a guitar for him. I went to his shop early Monday morning to finalize the details. His is
on the street level and his home is above it. I knocked on the glass door but he didn’t hear me. I looked inside and he
was happily dancing by himself. I knocked again. He waved through the door as if to say wait a minute. He decided to
open the door then turn down the music. I said what is that?
He told me he was a little slow and was listening to the opera La Traviata to get his energy going on a Monday morning.
First of all there are few guitars makers that I know that are Opera buffs. It was even funnier to see him dancing to the
music through the window. Somehow in one way he had broken the mold of being an uneducated Gypsy but he couldn’t
hold the sprit down as the dance was still in his soul. He happily waltzed around his work shop by himself at 9 AM in the
morning!! The quality of guitars also shows this happy spirit.
